During the lockdowns of 2020, artist Dani Smith built a sound system in collaboration with Black Tower Projects, designed specifically with the project space in mind. The process was bittersweet as they experimented with a technology that is renowned for bringing people together during a period of time where isolation was required.
Built partly using materials left behind from previous exhibition projects, the sound system is bespoke in the sense it is built with the texture and atmosphere of the project space in mind, rather than focusing on the architecture’s sonic properties. It gently resists audiophile precision in favour of idiosyncratic experimentalism.
The Black Tower Sound System will be launched by a series of events featuring live music by Ultramarine, Tara Clerkin Trio and Laetitia Sadier and DJ sets by Appau Jnr Boakye-Yiadom, Time Is Away, What Comes To Mind, Ella Blou, Love In The Afternoon and Flo Dill.
The Black Tower Sound System will reoccur at various points in our future public programme as a resource for artists and musicians to incorporate into their projects, exhibitions and events at Black Tower.
